GitOps Principles and Architecture

Flux follows GitOps best practices using Git repositories as the source of truth for Kubernetes cluster state. Its architecture is composed of specialized controllers that each handle a specific concern: source-controller manages artifact fetching and caching, kustomize-controller handles Kustomize-based deployments, helm-controller manages Helm releases, and notification-controller handles alerting and webhook dispatch. This modular design allows independent scaling and upgrading of controllers.

Progressive Delivery

Flux includes built-in progressive delivery capabilities through Flagger, its companion project for canary deployments, A/B testing, and blue-green releases. Flagger integrates with service mesh providers (Istio, Linkerd, Consul Connect, AWS App Mesh, Kuma) and ingress controllers (NGINX, Gloo, Traefik, Contour) for traffic shifting. Automated canary analysis includes metrics-based promotion and rollback decisions using Prometheus metrics.

Image Update Automation

Flux includes a built-in image update automation system that monitors container registries for new image versions and automatically updates Git repository manifests. This eliminates the need for external tools to keep Kubernetes deployments updated with the latest container images. Image update policies can be configured with semantic versioning constraints, tag filtering, and commit message templates.

Dependency Management

Flux supports sophisticated dependency management between resources using depends_on relationships. This enables ordered deployments where infrastructure prerequisites are applied before applications. Flux can automatically detect and manage dependencies across Custom Resources, namespaces, and cluster-scoped resources. The dependency system integrates with Flux's built-in health assessment to ensure prerequisites reach ready state before dependent resources are applied.

Multi-Tenancy

Flux provides strong multi-tenancy capabilities through namespace-scoped controller deployments, making it suitable for enterprise environments with strict workload isolation requirements. Each tenant can have its own set of Flux controllers operating within a namespace, with no cross-tenant access. Flux supports tenant-specific source configurations, Kustomize overlays, and Helm releases with isolated permissions and resource quotas.

Performance and Lightweight Design

Flux is designed for performance at scale, with a significantly smaller resource footprint than ArgoCD. Its modular controller architecture allows independent scaling based on workload patterns. Flux can manage thousands of resources efficiently on minimal infrastructure. The reconciliation cycle is optimized for low latency, and the use of OCI-compliant artifact storage enables efficient caching and distribution of configuration artifacts.
